Minitrekking 2: Perito Moreno Glacier Ice Trek

Experience a more challenging and immersive glacier adventure with Minitrekking 2, an excursion on the iconic Perito Moreno Glacier, designed for travelers seeking a deeper and more demanding connection with Patagonia’s ice landscapes.

.

Your journey begins with pick-up in El Calafate, followed by a scenic 70 km drive to Los Glaciares National Park. Along the way, your guides will share insights into the region’s landscapes and the dynamic behavior of the glacier. Upon arrival at “Bajo de las Sombras” Port, you’ll board a boat for a short 10-minute navigation across Lake Rico, sailing along the glacier’s impressive south face.

.

After landing at Bahía Puma, located just 500 meters from the glacier, professional mountain guides will welcome the group and begin the hike. The route starts along the lakeshore and continues across a rocky and uneven moraine, gradually approaching the ice. Near the Cascada de las Cotorras waterfall, participants are organized into small groups to receive crampons and helmets, maintaining a personalized and safe experience with one guide for every 10 travelers.

.

Once equipped, you’ll step onto the glacier for approximately one hour of exploration. This experience features a moderate to high difficulty level, covering around 5.5 km of mixed terrain, including rock, earth, and ice—making it more demanding than the classic Minitrekking. As you advance, you’ll encounter striking glacial formations such as deep crevasses, bright-blue moulins, towering seracs, and turquoise meltwater pools, all accompanied by the distinctive sound of crampons on ice.

.

After completing the ice circuit, the group visits the base of the waterfall before retracing the path along the moraine back to Bahía Puma. From there, the boat returns to the port, offering final views of the glacier’s massive ice wall and the chance to witness a calving event.

.

The full excursion lasts approximately 10 hours, including a guided visit to the glacier walkways, located 7 km from the port, where you can enjoy panoramic views and explore the trails at your own pace. Travelers arriving independently (without the walkway visit) will complete a 5-hour round trip from the port.

.

As this experience takes place in a natural and ever-changing environment, conditions vary daily, and departures in May are subject to weather and terrain conditions. The excursion only operates when safety can be fully guaranteed.

.
