Los Glaciares National Park is located in southern Patagonia, Argentina, in the province of Santa Cruz. The park includes two main areas: El Calafate, which is the gateway to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, and El Chaltén, known as Argentina’s trekking capital and home to Mount Fitz Roy.

The park is famous for its massive glaciers, dramatic mountain peaks, and pristine Patagonian landscapes. The most famous attraction is the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing.

The best time to visit is from October to April, during Patagonia’s spring and summer seasons. These months offer milder weather and the best conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. Winter (May–September) is quieter but colder, with limited trekking options.

Most travelers spend five to six days in the region. A common itinerary includes two days in El Calafate to visit Perito Moreno Glacier and nearby lakes, and three or four days in El Chaltén for hiking and mountain scenery.

No. While there are challenging trekking routes, many trails are well-marked and accessible for beginners. Short hikes to viewpoints and lakes allow visitors to enjoy the scenery without technical experience.

Yes. Visitors can join guided ice trekking excursions that allow you to walk on the glacier using crampons. These tours provide a unique way to explore the ice formations and crevasses safely.

The main gateway is El Calafate International Airport (FTE), with regular flights from Buenos Aires and other Argentine cities. From El Calafate, El Chaltén can be reached by bus or private transfer in about three hours.

Although the park is famous for its glaciers, it is also home to wildlife such as guanacos, foxes, condors, eagles, and Andean deer (huemul). Birdwatchers often spot many Patagonian species around lakes and mountain valleys.

Patagonian weather can change quickly, so it’s best to bring layered clothing, a windproof and waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a warm hat. Even during summer, strong winds and cooler temperatures are common.
