Other notable regions include the Lake District, the Aysén region along the Carretera Austral and Tierra del Fuego, each offering unique landscapes and trekking experiences
The best season for hiking in Patagonia is from October to April, during the southern hemisphere’s spring and summer. These months offer longer daylight hours and generally milder weather, which makes trekking conditions more favorable.
Many hiking trails in Patagonia and other national parks are well-marked and can be done independently. However, hiring a guide can enhance the experience by providing local knowledge about wildlife, geology, and history, and by helping with logistics in more remote areas.
Some of the most iconic hikes include:
The W Trek in Torres del Paine (Chile)
The O Circuit around the Paine Massif
The Laguna de los Tres hike in El Chaltén (Argentina)
The Base Torres trail in Torres del Paine
Multi-day hikes in Cerro Castillo National Park in Chile
These routes are known for dramatic mountain scenery, glaciers, and alpine lakes.
Hiking difficulty varies widely. Some trails are short scenic walks, while others are challenging full-day hikes or multi-day treks with steep climbs and unpredictable weather. Most travelers with reasonable fitness can enjoy many of the classic trails.
Weather conditions in southern Chile and Argentina can change quickly. Essential items include:
Waterproof jacket and pants
Warm layers
Hiking boots with good grip
Sun protection and sunglasses
A daypack and reusable water bottle
Trekking poles for longer hikes
Layering is important because temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day.
Yes, hiking in Patagonia is generally safe when travelers prepare properly and follow park guidelines. It’s important to check weather conditions, carry enough food and water, stay on marked trails, and inform someone of your plans when hiking remote routes.
Absolutely. Many destinations offer beginner-friendly trails with spectacular scenery and relatively short distances. Parks like El Chaltén and Torres del Paine have several accessible hikes that don’t require technical experience.
A typical hiking trip lasts 7 to 10 days, allowing travelers to explore several trails and landscapes. However, shorter trips of 3 to 5 days can still include some of the most famous hikes.

Maria and her team looked after us so well. I would recommend them in a flash. It was 20 years since I had been to El Calafate so I didn't know what to expect. It had changed so much! Maria was helpful, honest, well priced and a pleasure to work with. You could not ask for more. We had the best time thanks to Maria and her organisation. Fernando was our driver to a tour and a delight. Punctual, knowledgeable and all round wonderful. Gracias!!

Southwind from the planning stages to delivery of the trip in Patagonia were faultless and I really love the little reminders sent for each separate stage and really appreciated the added bits around passport checking and border crossing paperwork. The whole team was super friendly, and for our trip with Fernando he was great company and knew where to stop for refreshments and a view! We would strongly recommend southwind, they go the extra mile on service and have a permanent smile. Thank you guys you were faultless
