A fabulous company to travel with: the sequencing of the trip, the guides proposed, the suggestions for the area. We highly recommend this travel agency for Patagonia. Fernando is top+top.
The Atacama Desert is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Stretching across northern Chile, this vast high-altitude desert is shaped by salt flats, towering volcanoes, steaming geysers, and landscapes painted in surreal mineral colors. Known as the driest non-polar desert in the world, Atacama offers crystal-clear skies for stargazing, dramatic scenery, and a powerful sense of silence and immensity that is hard to find anywhere else.
Here, the contrasts are unforgettable. Red rock canyons glow at sunset, geothermal fields send steam into the cold morning air, and brilliant blue lagoons sit quietly in the desert, often dotted with graceful flamingos. Every corner of Atacama feels like another world. The small villages of the region hold centuries of Andean culture and traditions, with adobe homes, ancient pathways, and desert oases that have sustained life in this extreme landscape for generations. San Pedro de Atacama, the heart of the region, blends Indigenous heritage, archaeology, astronomy, and adventure into a destination unlike any other in South America.
For more than 15 years, we’ve been helping travelers experience northern Chile in a way that feels personal and meaningful. Each journey we design is tailored to your interests—whether that means photography, stargazing under some of the clearest skies on the planet, exploring geological wonders, enjoying outdoor adventures, discovering local culture, or relaxing in beautiful desert lodges.
Our goal is to take care of every detail so you can fully experience the magic of this remarkable place. With thoughtful planning, seamless logistics, and local insight, Atacama becomes more than a destination—it becomes your gateway to one of Chile’s most mystical and awe-inspiring regions.

Contact UsThe Atacama Desert is located in northern Chile, stretching between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. Most travelers explore the region from the small town of San Pedro de Atacama, which serves as the main gateway to the desert’s valleys, salt flats, geysers, and lagoons.
Most travelers reach San Pedro de Atacama by flying to Calama Airport, located about 100 km (62 miles) away. From Calama, a shared shuttle or private transfer takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the town.
It’s also possible to arrive by land from Argentina, crossing the Andes through the Paso de Jama, a scenic high-altitude border pass that connects northern Argentina with Chile’s Atacama region. Many travelers include this route when combining destinations such as Salta, Jujuy, or the Argentine Puna with San Pedro de Atacama, creating a unique overland journey across some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Andes.
The Atacama Desert can be visited year-round, but the best months are typically March to May and September to November. During these periods the weather is generally pleasant, with fewer visitors and comfortable temperatures for exploring.
Most travelers spend 3 to 4 days in the Atacama Desert to see the main highlights. However, 4 to 5 days allows for a more relaxed experience, including stargazing tours, high-altitude lagoons, geysers, and desert valleys.
The Atacama Desert is famous for being the driest non-polar desert in the world and for its dramatic landscapes. Visitors come to see salt flats, active geysers, high-altitude lagoons with flamingos, colorful rock formations, volcanoes, and some of the clearest night skies on Earth for stargazing.
ome of the most popular experiences include: Visiting Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), Watching sunrise at El Tatio Geysers, Exploring the Altiplanic Lagoons, Seeing flamingos in the Atacama Salt Flats, Stargazing under some of the clearest skies in the world, Cycling or hiking through desert valleys
Yes. San Pedro de Atacama sits at around 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) above sea level, and some excursions—such as the Altiplanic lagoons or geysers—reach elevations of 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) or higher. Travelers should plan activities gradually to adapt to the altitude.
Yes. The Atacama Desert is considered one of the best stargazing destinations in the world thanks to its high altitude, dry air, and minimal light pollution. Several observatories and guided astronomy tours operate near San Pedro de Atacama.
The desert climate can change quickly between day and night, so it’s important to bring: light clothing for warm days, warm layers for cold nights, a windproof jacket, sunscreen and sunglasses, comfortable walking or hiking shoes, a hat and reusable water bottle.
Yes. The Atacama region is generally very safe for visitors, especially around San Pedro de Atacama and organized tour areas. As with any destination, it’s wise to follow local advice, stay hydrated, and be mindful of altitude when planning excursions.
