The Atacama Desert is located in northern Chile, stretching between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. Most travelers explore the region from the small town of San Pedro de Atacama, which serves as the main gateway to the desert’s valleys, salt flats, geysers, and lagoons.

Most travelers reach San Pedro de Atacama by flying to Calama Airport, located about 100 km (62 miles) away. From Calama, a shared shuttle or private transfer takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the town.

It’s also possible to arrive by land from Argentina, crossing the Andes through the Paso de Jama, a scenic high-altitude border pass that connects northern Argentina with Chile’s Atacama region. Many travelers include this route when combining destinations such as Salta, Jujuy, or the Argentine Puna with San Pedro de Atacama, creating a unique overland journey across some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Andes.

The Atacama Desert can be visited year-round, but the best months are typically March to May and September to November. During these periods the weather is generally pleasant, with fewer visitors and comfortable temperatures for exploring.

Most travelers spend 3 to 4 days in the Atacama Desert to see the main highlights. However, 4 to 5 days allows for a more relaxed experience, including stargazing tours, high-altitude lagoons, geysers, and desert valleys.
