Península Valdés, Bahía Bustamante & Patagonia Azul: Atlantic Wildlife Circuit

Península Valdés, Bahía Bustamante & Patagonia Azul: Atlantic Wildlife Circuit

Argentina
6 Days

Overview

Bahía Bustamante sits 170 kilometers south of Puerto Madryn — far enough from the standard Valdés circuit that most Atlantic Patagonia visitors never reach it. Located inside the Patagonia Azul Biosphere Reserve, the lodge sits among kelp forests, Magellanic penguin colonies at Isla Pingüino, a petrified forest of ancient araucaria trees, and a coastline that sees almost no tourist traffic. This 6-day private Patagonia Atlantic coast itinerary opens with a full day at Península Valdés for Southern right whale watching and sea lion colonies before heading south to Bahía Bustamante, where the Biosphere Reserve's scale and remoteness deliver a completely different experience from the UNESCO reserve to the north — quieter, wilder, and largely off the radar for international visitors.

  • Bahía Bustamante Lodge — Inside the Biosphere Reserve: A working sheep estancia turned conservation lodge, positioned within the Patagonia Azul reserve with direct access to its own coastline, penguin colonies, and fossilized forest — experiences not accessible from Puerto Madryn.

  • Private Wildlife Guide at Península Valdés: The whale watching excursion and peninsula circuit are covered with a dedicated local naturalist guide, timed around tidal windows and current wildlife activity rather than a fixed tour schedule.

  • Punta Tombo Penguin Colony on the Return: The drive back north from Bahía Bustamante passes through Punta Tombo, home to one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in South America — a natural addition that adds no extra travel day to the route.

  • Fully Customizable: This private Atlantic Patagonia itinerary connects naturally with Buenos Aires, El Calafate, or Ushuaia as part of a broader private Argentina wildlife tour.

Trip Highlights

The signature moments that make this journey unforgettable.

  • Watch Southern Right Whales in Península Valdés during whale season, when mothers nurse calves in the sheltered bays of the UNESCO reserve

  • Visit elephant seal and sea lion colonies across the peninsula

  • Stay at Bahía Bustamante Lodge inside the Patagonia Azul Biosphere Reserve, one of Patagonia's most remote coastal properties

  • Walk through a Patagonian petrified forest, preserved coastal terrain from a geological period when this area was covered by subtropical vegetation

  • Reach Isla Pingüino by boat for a Magellanic penguin colony at the edge of the Atlantic

  • Walk among thousands of Magellanic penguins at Punta Tombo, one of South America's largest penguin colonies, with up to a million birds during peak breeding season

Itinerary

Day 1

A private transfer from Trelew Airport (REL) to Puerto Madryn, the coastal gateway to Península Valdés on Golfo Nuevo. Depending on your arrival time, an afternoon stroll along the waterfront or a first dinner at one of the town's seafood restaurants.

Day 2

A full day inside Península Valdés, starting with a whale watching boat excursion into the sheltered bays where Southern Right Whales come specifically to nurse and raise calves in calm, shallow water — which is why encounters here tend to be closer and longer than in open-ocean whale watching locations. After the boat, a drive across the peninsula's open steppe to the Punta Norte sea lion colonies, elephant seal beaches, and the Valdés coastal cliffs.

Day 3

A private overland transfer south to Bahía Bustamante Lodge, inside the Patagonia Azul Biosphere Reserve. The lodge was originally a seaweed-harvesting operation founded in the 1950s, the largest of its kind in Argentina at the time, and later converted into a private eco-lodge with exclusive access to the surrounding coastline. The afternoon is free for a walk through the property's petrified forest fragments — coastal terrain preserving fossilized wood from a period when subtropical vegetation covered this part of Patagonia.

Day 4

Boat crossing to Isla Pingüino, a small island offshore with a resident Magellanic penguin colony accessible only from the lodge. Options for the afternoon include kayaking through the kelp forest along the coastline, birdwatching on the reserve's trails, or a longer guided walk through the steppe.

Day 5

Begin your journey back north toward Puerto Madryn, with a fascinating stop at Punta Tombo, home to one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in the world. Walking along designated paths, you’ll have the unique opportunity to observe thousands of penguins as they nest, interact, and move freely around you. This close-up wildlife experience is both captivating and humbling. After your visit, continue to Puerto Madryn for your final evening, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible encounters and landscapes experienced throughout your Patagonian adventure.

Day 6

A private transfer to Trelew Airport (REL) for your flight back to Buenos Aires and onward international connections.

Southwind from the planning stages to delivery of the trip in Patagonia were faultless and I really love the little reminders sent for each separate stage and really appreciated the added bits around passport checking and border crossing paperwork. The whole team was super friendly, and for our trip with Fernando he was great company and knew where to stop for refreshments and a view! We would strongly recommend southwind, they go the extra mile on service and have a permanent smile. Thank you guys you were faultless.

I had a great experience with Southwind. They organized a tour for us to visit Monte Leon from El Calafate. Fernando & Laura organized the logistics and were very helpful. Martin accompanied us on the tour and doubled up as driver and tour guide, which was beyond our expectations. We saw a lot of wildlife en route, as well as in the park with Martin’s help. I highly recommend Southwind for your Patagonia experience.

Maria and her team looked after us so well. I would recommend them in a flash. It was 20 years since I had been to El Calafate so I didn't know what to expect. It had changed so much! Maria was helpful, honest, well priced and a pleasure to work with. You could not ask for more. We had the best time thanks to Maria and her organisation. Fernando was our driver to a tour and a delight. Punctual, knowledgeable and all round wonderful. Gracias!!

How to Customize This Itinerary

This itinerary is a foundation, not a fixed template — we shape it around what draws you to Argentina's Atlantic coast in the first place.

  • Add Buenos Aires at the start for tango, world-class restaurants, and the city's historic neighborhoods.

  • Extend to El Calafate for Perito Moreno Glacier and Lago Argentino navigation.

  • Add Bariloche's Lake District for boutique mountain lodges and scenic lake navigation.

  • Continue to Ushuaia for the Beagle Channel and Tierra del Fuego National Park.

  • Add an extra night in Puerto Madryn for sea lion snorkeling or kayaking in Golfo Nuevo.

Every adjustment is shaped around what the trip means to you, then re-engineered with the same private logistics as the original route.
