Buenos Aires & Península Valdés: Private Wildlife & City Tour

Buenos Aires & Península Valdés: Private Wildlife & City Tour

Argentina
7 Days

Overview

Buenos Aires and Península Valdés sit 1,400 kilometers apart on the same Atlantic coastline — one the cultural and gastronomic capital of the country, the other a UNESCO World Heritage marine reserve where Southern right whales, elephant seals, sea lions, Magellanic penguins, and seasonal orca strandings occupy the same coastline. This 7-day private Buenos Aires and Península Valdés itinerary covers both: two days in Buenos Aires with a dedicated local guide through San Telmo, Recoleta, La Boca, and an authentic tango dinner, followed by four days along the Patagonian coast covering whale watching from Puerto Pirámides, the penguin colony and traditional asado at El Pedral Ranch, sea lion kayaking in Golfo Nuevo, and whale observation from the beach at El Doradillo. Every flight, private transfer, and coastal excursion is coordinated in advance so moving between the country's capital and its most important wildlife reserve requires nothing from you beyond being ready at the hotel door.

  • Whale Watching Seasonality: Southern right whales are present in the sheltered bays of Golfo Nuevo from June through December, peaking in September and October. This itinerary is designed around your specific travel window — we advise in advance which species will be most active and structure the excursions accordingly.

  • El Pedral Ranch — Penguins: A working estancia on the southern end of Golfo Nuevo with a private Magellanic penguin colony and a traditional Patagonian lamb barbecue — combining wildlife and authentic ranching culture in a single half-day that no standard Valdés circuit includes.

  • El Doradillo Shore Observation: The beach at El Doradillo is one of the few places in the world where Southern right whales approach within meters of the shoreline — a completely different experience from a boat excursion, and a natural close to the Valdés section of the itinerary.

  • Private Wildlife Guiding: Explore alongside expert naturalist guides whose local knowledge of habitats and animal behavior enhances every safari, boat excursion, and nature walk.

  • Fully Customizable: This private Buenos Aires and Patagonia itinerary extends naturally toward El Calafate, Ushuaia, or Bariloche for travelers wanting to continue deeper into Patagonia after Valdés.

Itinerary

Day 1

A private transfer from Ezeiza (EZE) or Aeroparque (AEP) to your hotel in Palermo or Recoleta. The rest of the day is free to explore the neighborhood at your own pace.

Day 2

A private city tour through San Telmo, the city's oldest barrio; La Boca and the Caminito; Puerto Madero; Palermo; and Recoleta, home to the cemetery where Eva Perón is buried. Stops at Plaza de Mayo, the 9 de Julio Avenue and Obelisk, and the Colón Theater. In the evening, a tango dinner show at Café de los Angelitos, a historic venue in the Almagro neighborhood with a live orchestra and 21 performers.

Day 3

A domestic flight from Buenos Aires to Trelew (REL), with a private transfer to Puerto Madryn on Golfo Nuevo. The rest of the day is free for the waterfront or a first dinner at one of the town's seafood restaurants.

Day 4

A full day inside the Península Valdés UNESCO reserve, starting with a boat excursion from Puerto Pirámides into the sheltered bays where Southern Right Whales come to nurse and raise their calves — which is why encounters here tend to be closer and longer than open-ocean whale watching. After the boat, a drive to Caleta Valdés for the elephant seal colony and across the peninsula's open steppe to the sea lion beaches.

Day 5

A drive to Punta Ninfas and El Pedral Ranch, built in 1923 on the edge of Golfo Nuevo. The ranch has a resident Magellanic penguin colony — a guided walk among the nests on the property grounds. After the visit, a traditional Patagonian lamb barbecue with salads, dessert, and regional wines.

Day 6

A morning kayak excursion in the calm waters of Golfo Nuevo, paddling near the sea lion colony at Punta Loma. In the afternoon, a drive 50 km north to El Doradillo Beach, where Southern Right Whales regularly swim within meters of the shoreline during the season — one of the few places in the world where whale observation from land is this consistent.

Day 7

A private transfer to Trelew Airport (REL) for your domestic flight back to Buenos Aires and onward international connections.

Southwind from the planning stages to delivery of the trip in Patagonia were faultless and I really love the little reminders sent for each separate stage and really appreciated the added bits around passport checking and border crossing paperwork. The whole team was super friendly, and for our trip with Fernando he was great company and knew where to stop for refreshments and a view! We would strongly recommend southwind, they go the extra mile on service and have a permanent smile. Thank you guys you were faultless.

I had a great experience with Southwind. They organized a tour for us to visit Monte Leon from El Calafate. Fernando & Laura organized the logistics and were very helpful. Martin accompanied us on the tour and doubled up as driver and tour guide, which was beyond our expectations. We saw a lot of wildlife en route, as well as in the park with Martin’s help. I highly recommend Southwind for your Patagonia experience.

Maria and her team looked after us so well. I would recommend them in a flash. It was 20 years since I had been to El Calafate so I didn't know what to expect. It had changed so much! Maria was helpful, honest, well priced and a pleasure to work with. You could not ask for more. We had the best time thanks to Maria and her organisation. Fernando was our driver to a tour and a delight. Punctual, knowledgeable and all round wonderful. Gracias!!

How to Customize This Itinerary

This itinerary is a foundation, not a fixed template — we shape it around what draws you to Argentina in the first place.

  • Add El Calafate and El Chaltén for Perito Moreno Glacier and Fitz Roy trekking.

  • Continue to Ushuaia for the Beagle Channel navigation and Tierra del Fuego National Park.

  • Extend to Bariloche for boutique mountain lodges, lake navigation, and Andean landscapes.

  • Add extra days in Puerto Madryn for snorkeling with sea lions or a Bahía Bustamante extension.

Every adjustment is shaped around what the trip means to you, then re-engineered with the same private logistics as the original route.
