Torres del Paine W Trek: Refugio-Based Private Tour

Torres del Paine W Trek: Refugio-Based Private Tour

Chile
6 Days

Overview

This 6-day private W Trek Torres del Paine itinerary covers the park's three main valleys in reverse, starting at Las Torres in the east and finishing at Grey Glacier in the west. Moving between mountain refugios each day, the route covers the W Trek's iconic 68 kilometers with the support of a private trekking guide and carefully coordinated logistics, including refugio reservations, catamaran crossings, private transfers, and departure timings. Beginning at the eastern end brings the iconic Torres viewpoint on Day 2, when legs are still fresh, while the journey gradually unfolds toward the glaciers, lakes, and forests of the park's western sector.

  • Paine Towers First: Starting in the east brings you to the iconic Torres del Paine viewpoint on Day 2, when energy levels are highest and morning weather conditions are often at their most favorable, before continuing across the French Valley toward Grey Glacier.

  • Private Trekking Guide & Seamless Logistics: An experienced local mountain guide accompanies the most demanding sections of the trek, while refugio reservations, private transfers, catamaran crossings, park logistics, and luggage coordination are arranged in advance for a seamless experience.

  • Mountain Refuge-Based Trekking: Overnight stays at Refugio Chileno, Los Cuernos or Francés Domes, Paine Grande, and Refugio Grey include warm meals and hot showers, allowing you to experience the classic W Trek without carrying camping equipment.

  • Fully Customizable: Extend your journey to El Calafate for the Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén for Fitz Roy trekking, or add a dedicated puma tracking extension inside Torres del Paine.

Trip Highlights

The signature moments that make this journey unforgettable.

  • Hike to the Base of the Paine Towers, where the three granite spires reflect in a turquoise glacial lagoon

  • Trek the French Valley, one of the most scenic sections of the W — hanging glaciers, vertical rock walls, and a mountain amphitheater

  • Navigate Lake Pehoé by catamaran to reach the French Valley trailhead

  • Walk the Grey Glacier shoreline alongside floating icebergs drifted from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field

  • Optional kayaking or ice trekking on Grey Glacier on Day 6

Itinerary

Day 1

From El Calafate (5 hours) or Punta Arenas (2.5–3 hours), a private transfer to Hotel Las Torres, the eastern gateway to the W Trek. The afternoon is free for acclimatization walks or a first look at the Torres on the horizon.

Day 2

18 km round trip | 880m elevation gain | 6–8 hours | Challenging

The circuit's signature hike, beginning at Hotel Las Torres. The trail climbs through lenga beech forest and along the Ascencio River before a steep moraine ascent to the glacial lagoon at the base of the three granite spires. Overnight: Refugio Chileno.

Day 3

18 km | 6–7 hours | Moderate–Challenging

West along the main W route, past the turquoise shores of Lake Nordenskjöld and through scenic valleys with the Cuernos del Paine peaks as a backdrop. Overnight: Frances Domes or Refugio Los Cuernos.

Day 4

17 km | 6–8 hours | Challenging

A morning excursion into the French Valley — a glacial amphitheater flanked by hanging glaciers, vertical rock walls, and views up to the Paine Horns. After reaching the upper mirador, descend and continue to Refugio Paine Grande on the shore of Lake Pehoé. Overnight: Refugio Paine Grande.

Day 5

11 km | 3.5–4.5 hours | Moderate

A shorter day following the shoreline of Grey Lake northward, with the first icebergs appearing as the Grey Glacier approaches. Overnight: Refugio Grey.

Day 6

Optional morning activities at Grey Glacier: a guided kayak excursion alongside the glacier face, or an ice trekking session with crampons on the ice surface. The return hike (11 km) leads back to Refugio Paine Grande, then a catamaran crossing of Lake Pehoé closes the W circuit. Private transfer to Puerto Natales or El Calafate.

Southwind from the planning stages to delivery of the trip in Patagonia were faultless and I really love the little reminders sent for each separate stage and really appreciated the added bits around passport checking and border crossing paperwork. The whole team was super friendly, and for our trip with Fernando he was great company and knew where to stop for refreshments and a view! We would strongly recommend southwind, they go the extra mile on service and have a permanent smile. Thank you guys you were faultless.

I had a great experience with Southwind. They organized a tour for us to visit Monte Leon from El Calafate. Fernando & Laura organized the logistics and were very helpful. Martin accompanied us on the tour and doubled up as driver and tour guide, which was beyond our expectations. We saw a lot of wildlife en route, as well as in the park with Martin’s help. I highly recommend Southwind for your Patagonia experience.

Maria and her team looked after us so well. I would recommend them in a flash. It was 20 years since I had been to El Calafate so I didn't know what to expect. It had changed so much! Maria was helpful, honest, well priced and a pleasure to work with. You could not ask for more. We had the best time thanks to Maria and her organisation. Fernando was our driver to a tour and a delight. Punctual, knowledgeable and all round wonderful. Gracias!!

How to Customize This Itinerary

This itinerary is a foundation, not a fixed template — we shape it around what draws you to Torres del Paine in the first place.

  • Add El Calafate for Perito Moreno Glacier and the Todo Glaciares navigation to Upsala and Spegazzini.

  • Add El Chaltén for Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre trekking on the Argentine side.

  • Add puma tracking days inside Torres del Paine before or after the W Trek.

  • Continue to Ushuaia for the Beagle Channel and Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Every adjustment is shaped around what the trip means to you, then re-engineered with the same private logistics as the original route.

Tips for this Route:

  • Accommodation: Refugios (Chileno, Los Cuernos/Frances Domes, Paine Grande, Grey) provide dormitory beds, hearty meals, and hot showers. Book well in advance.

  • Gear: Pack layers, a windproof jacket, and hiking boots. Trekking poles are helpful for steep sections.

  • Best Season: October to April offers the most favorable weather conditions.

  • Fitness Level: This route requires moderate to high fitness due to its distances and elevation changes.
