Iguazú Falls & Iberá Wetlands: Private Nature Tour

Iguazú Falls & Iberá Wetlands: Private Nature Tour

Argentina
6 Days

Overview

Iguazú Falls and the Iberá Wetlands sit at opposite ends of Argentina's northeast — one a subtropical spectacle of water and rainforest sound, the other a quiet marshland ecosystem where caimans, capybaras, marsh deer, and increasingly, jaguars, move through lagoons and grasslands at their own pace. This 6-day private Iguazú and Iberá itinerary covers both in compact form: two days on the falls covering both the Argentine and Brazilian circuits at crowd-free hours, and two nights at an estancia inside the Iberá reserve for boat safaris, walking excursions, and wildlife encounters timed around animal activity. Every transfer between Puerto Iguazú and the Iberá access point at Posadas is coordinated in advance, so the transition between two very different ecosystems requires nothing from you beyond being at the hotel door.

  • Both Sides of Iguazú Falls: The Argentine side's lower and upper circuits plus the Devil's Throat, and the Brazilian side's panoramic viewpoint — covered with a private local guide who times each circuit to avoid the midday cruise-ship peak.

  • Iberá Estancia Stay: Accommodation inside the wetlands reserve rather than in the nearest city, with dedicated local naturalist guides for morning boat safaris, afternoon walking excursions, and nocturnal wildlife outings shaped around what's active each day.

  • Private Transfers Throughout: Every overland transfer is arranged in advance, including the connection from Puerto Iguazú to Posadas, allowing you to travel comfortably between Iguazú Falls and the Iberá Wetlands without logistical concerns.

  • Fully Customizable: This private Iguazú and Iberá itinerary extends naturally into Buenos Aires, Patagonia, or Península Valdés for wildlife-focused travelers wanting to add coastal Argentina to the circuit.

Trip Highlights

The signature moments that make this journey unforgettable.

  • Visit both sides of Iguazú Falls — the Argentine close-up trails and the Brazilian panoramic walkway

  • Walk through Iguazú National Park's Atlantic rainforest, with toucans, coatis, and hundreds of butterfly species along the trails

  • Boat safari through the Iberá lagoons, spotting caimans, capybaras, marsh deer, giant river otters, and hundreds of bird species

  • Walk on an authentic gaucho estancia in the Iberá reserve, with homemade meals and traditional rural life

  • Learn about Iberá's rewilding project, which has reintroduced jaguars to the wetlands after a 70-year absence

Itinerary

Day 1

Private transfer from Iguazú Airport (IGR) to your rainforest hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the hotel grounds, where the subtropical forest begins directly outside the door.

Day 2

A full day inside Iguazú National Park on the Argentine side, with a private guide timing the route for the quieter hours of the morning. The Lower Circuit runs within arm's reach of the smaller falls; the ecological train reaches the elevated walkway above the Devil's Throat, a 150-meter U-shaped cataract where the Iguazú River disappears into permanent spray. Toucans, coatis, and butterflies native to the Atlantic rainforest are a regular sight along the trails

Day 3

The border crossing into Brazil is handled by your driver. Once across, the Brazilian side of Iguaçu National Park delivers the wide-angle counterpart to yesterday's close-up Argentine trails — a single elevated walkway showing all 275 falls in full panoramic width. Optional helicopter flights or boat excursions to the base of the falls can be arranged.

Day 4

An overland transfer from Puerto Iguazú to Posadas, where your naturalist guide meets you for the drive to your estancia inside the Iberá Wetlands. These properties combine authentic rural life with wildlife access — homemade meals, direct access to the lagoons, and horses available for exploring the surrounding land.

Day 5

A full-day boat safari through Iberá's lagoons, with caimans, capybaras, and marsh deer regularly visible at close range. Your guide explains the rewilding project that has restored Iberá's wildlife populations over the past two decades — including the reintroduction of jaguars, locally extinct for roughly 70 years before the project began. In the afternoon, a guided walk through the reserve's transition forests covers native flora, medicinal plants, and birdlife.

Day 6

A private transfer to Posadas Airport (PSS) for your domestic flight to Buenos Aires and onward international connections.

Southwind from the planning stages to delivery of the trip in Patagonia were faultless and I really love the little reminders sent for each separate stage and really appreciated the added bits around passport checking and border crossing paperwork. The whole team was super friendly, and for our trip with Fernando he was great company and knew where to stop for refreshments and a view! We would strongly recommend southwind, they go the extra mile on service and have a permanent smile. Thank you guys you were faultless.

I had a great experience with Southwind. They organized a tour for us to visit Monte Leon from El Calafate. Fernando & Laura organized the logistics and were very helpful. Martin accompanied us on the tour and doubled up as driver and tour guide, which was beyond our expectations. We saw a lot of wildlife en route, as well as in the park with Martin’s help. I highly recommend Southwind for your Patagonia experience.

Maria and her team looked after us so well. I would recommend them in a flash. It was 20 years since I had been to El Calafate so I didn't know what to expect. It had changed so much! Maria was helpful, honest, well priced and a pleasure to work with. You could not ask for more. We had the best time thanks to Maria and her organisation. Fernando was our driver to a tour and a delight. Punctual, knowledgeable and all round wonderful. Gracias!!

How to Customize This Itinerary

This itinerary is a foundation, not a fixed template — we shape it around what draws you to Argentina in the first place.

  • Add extra nights in Iberá for dedicated birdwatching, photography, or horseback riding inside the reserve.

  • Include Buenos Aires for tango, world-class restaurants, and the city's historic neighborhoods.

  • Extend to Patagonia for the glacier landscapes of El Calafate and the trekking trails of El Chaltén.

  • Add more time in Iguazú for jungle activities or a visit to a local indigenous community.

Every adjustment is shaped around what the trip means to you, then re-engineered with the same private logistics as the original route.
