Itinerary

Day 1

Your driver meets you at Balmaceda Airport (BBA) for a 1.5-hour drive along the Carretera Austral to Cerro Castillo village, at the base of the mountain range of the same name. Depending on arrival time, a short acclimatization walk around the village is an option before settling in for the next day's hike.

Day 2

12–14 km round trip | 900–1,100m elevation gain | 6–8 hours | Moderate–Challenging

A steady ascent through lenga (Nothofagus) forest, gaining elevation before the trail opens into alpine terrain with loose rock, exposed slopes, and wide views over the surrounding valleys. The final approach to the lagoon involves steep inclines, with snow possible in early summer. At the top, Laguna Cerro Castillo sits at the foot of hanging glaciers and jagged peaks, with small icebergs sometimes visible depending on recent calving activity.

Day 3

~220 km | 4–5 hours driving | 1–2 hours navigation | Easy

An early departure south along the Carretera Austral — both paved and gravel sections, with multiple scenic stops along rivers and mountain passes. In the afternoon, a motorboat or kayak excursion to the Marble Caves (Capillas de Mármol), where calcium carbonate formations have been hollowed by wave action over thousands of years into caverns that shift color as the light moves through the water.

Day 4

~80 km round trip by land | 2–2.5 hours navigation each way | Full day

A pre-dawn departure west via the X-728 route through dense temperate rainforest to Bahía Exploradores, then a boat navigation through fjords and channels into Laguna San Rafael National Park. San Rafael Glacier is part of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, which outside Antarctica is among the largest concentrations of ice in the Southern Hemisphere. Calving events can occur at any time.

Day 5

~220 km | 4–6 hours driving

The return north along the Carretera Austral offers a different perspective on the same landscapes, transitioning from the fjord-adjacent rainforest near Tranquilo back through steppe and valley terrain toward Coyhaique, the main urban center of the Aysén Region.

Day 6

A morning transfer from Coyhaique to Balmaceda Airport (approximately 1 hour), crossing Andean terrain and typical Patagonian steppe. Flights from Balmaceda connect to Santiago. Your team monitors conditions and communicates any weather-related changes before departure.

To start this journey, travelers will need to fly into Balmaceda (BBA), located just outside Balmaceda City. This airport receives domestic flights from and international connections via Santiago de Chile (SCL).

  • Arrival Flight: Traveler flies from origin city to Santiago de Chile (SCL), then connects with a domestic flight to Balmaceda (BBA).

  • Departure Flight: At the end of the itinerary, travelers will take a domestic flight from Balmaceda (BBA) back to Santiago de Chile (SCL)  for onward international connections.
