Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive at Balmaceda Airport, the main gateway to Chilean Patagonia’s Aysén Region. After meeting your guide, begin a ~1.5-hour drive toward Cerro Castillo via the Carretera Austral. Arrival in the Cerro Castillo, allowing time to settle into your lodge and prepare for the following day’s hike.

Day 2

This is one of the most iconic hikes in Cerro Castillo National Park and a true highlight of the itinerary.

The trail begins with a steady ascent through lenga (Nothofagus) forest, gradually gaining elevation before opening into alpine terrain. As you climb higher, vegetation becomes sparse, giving way to exposed slopes, loose rock, and wide panoramic views over the surrounding valleys.

The final approach to the lagoon is the most physically demanding section, often involving steep inclines and, depending on the season, sections of snow or muddy ground.

At the summit, Laguna Cerro Castillo reveals a dramatic landscape: a deep blue glacial lake framed by jagged peaks and hanging glaciers. Small icebergs are sometimes visible in early summer, depending on temperatures and recent calving activity.

  • Distance: 12–14 km (7.5–8.7 miles, round trip)

  • Elevation Gain: 900–1,100 meters (2,950–3,600 feet)

  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

Day 3

Depart early and continue south along the Carretera Austral. This section of the route includes both paved and gravel roads, with winding stretches, river crossings, and frequent scenic viewpoints.

As you approach Lake General Carrera, the landscape opens up to reveal one of Patagonia’s most impressive bodies of water. The lake’s intense turquoise color is caused by fine glacial sediment suspended in the water.

In the afternoon, visit the Marble Caves. The Marble Caves are naturally sculpted formations of calcium carbonate, shaped over thousands of years by wave action. The light reflection on the water creates constantly changing blue tones inside the caves.

  • Distance (land transfer): ~220 km (137 miles)

  • Driving Time: 4–5 hours (can vary due to road conditions)

  • Navigation Duration: 1–2 hours

  • Access: Motorboat (standard) or kayak (weather dependent)

  • Difficulty: Easy

Day 4

Depart very early in the morning from Puerto Río Tranquilo and travel west toward Bahía Exploradores via the X-728 route. This remote road passes through dense temperate rainforest, river valleys, and glacial landscapes, offering a very different environment compared to the open steppe seen earlier in the trip.

Upon arrival at Bahía Exploradores, board a boat and begin navigation through a network of fjords and channels within Laguna San Rafael National Park. As the journey progresses, floating icebergs begin to appear, signaling proximity to the San Rafael Glacier, one of the few tidewater glaciers in Chile that is accessible without multi-day expeditions.

At the glacier lagoon, you will have time to observe the ice wall and surrounding landscape. Calving events, where chunks of ice break off and fall into the water, can occur at any time.

  • Distance (land transfer): ~80 km (50 miles) round trip from Puerto Río Tranquilo

  • Driving Time: ~2–2.5 hours each way

  • Navigation Time: ~2–2.5 hours each way

  • Total Duration: 10–12 hours

Day 5

Return north along the Carretera Austral toward Coyhaique. This way offers a different perspective of the same landscapes, with opportunities to stop at rivers, valleys, and scenic viewpoints depending on weather and group preference. Road conditions may vary, with both paved and gravel sections. Travel times can fluctuate accordingly.

  • Distance: ~220 km (137 miles)

  • Driving Time: 4–6 hours

After breakfast, transfer from Coyhaique to Balmaceda Airport. The route crosses bautiful landscapes with views of the Andes and typical Patagonian terrain shaped by wind and glacial activity. Flights from Balmaceda usually connect to Santiago. Due to Patagonia’s weather conditions, minor delays are possible.
