Península Valdés & Estancia Rincón Chico: Private Wildlife Tour

Península Valdés & Estancia Rincón Chico: Private Wildlife Tour

Argentina
5 Days

Overview

This 5-day private Península Valdés itinerary is built around a single base — Estancia Rincón Chico, a historic working ranch and private nature reserve on the southeastern coast of Península Valdés. Staying inside the reserve rather than commuting from Puerto Madryn allows more time for wildlife encounters and direct access to remote beaches, coastal cliffs, and the Patagonian steppe. Depending on the season, Southern right whales, Southern elephant seals, sea lions, guanacos, and abundant birdlife can all be observed within the property or its surrounding coastline, with each day planned around tides, weather, and animal activity.

  • Estancia Rincón Chico — A Private Nature Reserve: Stay at a historic working estancia with exclusive access to its own coastline, elephant seal colonies, and wildlife-rich landscapes inside Península Valdés — far from the day-trip crowds.

  • Wildlife at the Right Time of Year: Every itinerary is planned around seasonal wildlife activity, from Southern right whales and elephant seals to orca sightings at Punta Norte or sea lion snorkelling, depending on your travel dates.

  • Expert Wildlife Guides & Private Transfers: Dedicated naturalist guides lead every excursion, adapting each outing to tides, weather, and animal activity, while private transfers ensure seamless travel throughout the peninsula.

  • Fully Customizable: Tailor the itinerary to your interests, preferred pace, and travel dates, with the option to extend your journey to Buenos Aires, El Calafate, or Ushuaia.

  • Intimate lodge experience with full-board gourmet dining and a limited number of guests

Itinerary

Day 1

A private transfer from Puerto Madryn (or Trelew, depending on your flight) covers the drive to Estancia Rincón Chico, a working ranch turned private reserve on the southeastern coast of the peninsula. After checking in, your guide outlines the next few days based on current tide tables and recent wildlife activity, then leads a coastal walk along the property's cliffs — whales are often visible offshore during the season, alongside sea lions and seabirds.

Day 2

A boat excursion to a sea lion colony, with snorkel or scuba options for getting in the water alongside them — South American sea lions are naturally curious and tend to approach divers rather than avoid them. In the afternoon, a guided walk through the steppe covers guanacos, foxes, and the property's birdlife, or you can spend the time on the lodge deck overlooking the ocean.

Day 3

A guided walk along the reserve's clifftop trails to its elephant seal colonies, present on these beaches year-round rather than seasonally. Your naturalist guide covers the conservation history of the area and the species' breeding behavior. In the afternoon, options include birdwatching, fossil-hunting along exposed sedimentary layers, or a walk through the dune fields; after dark, the property's distance from any town makes for unusually clear stargazing.

Day 4

A transfer back to Puerto Madryn for a kayak excursion timed to whale season, when Southern Right Whales come close enough to shore for paddling encounters with experienced guides — mothers and calves are often visible just meters from the kayaks. The afternoon is free in Puerto Madryn before returning to your hotel for the night.

Day 5

Your private transfer is timed against your flight schedule, with your local team monitoring the day's flight status so the drive to the airport leaves the right amount of buffer.

Southwind from the planning stages to delivery of the trip in Patagonia were faultless and I really love the little reminders sent for each separate stage and really appreciated the added bits around passport checking and border crossing paperwork. The whole team was super friendly, and for our trip with Fernando he was great company and knew where to stop for refreshments and a view! We would strongly recommend southwind, they go the extra mile on service and have a permanent smile. Thank you guys you were faultless.

I had a great experience with Southwind. They organized a tour for us to visit Monte Leon from El Calafate. Fernando & Laura organized the logistics and were very helpful. Martin accompanied us on the tour and doubled up as driver and tour guide, which was beyond our expectations. We saw a lot of wildlife en route, as well as in the park with Martin’s help. I highly recommend Southwind for your Patagonia experience.

Maria and her team looked after us so well. I would recommend them in a flash. It was 20 years since I had been to El Calafate so I didn't know what to expect. It had changed so much! Maria was helpful, honest, well priced and a pleasure to work with. You could not ask for more. We had the best time thanks to Maria and her organisation. Fernando was our driver to a tour and a delight. Punctual, knowledgeable and all round wonderful. Gracias!!

How to Customize This Itinerary

This itinerary is a foundation, not a fixed template — we shape it around what draws you to Patagonia in the first place.

  • Add Buenos Aires at the start or end for tango, world-class restaurants, and the city's historic neighborhoods.

  • Continue to El Calafate for Perito Moreno Glacier and the rest of Los Glaciares National Park.

  • Add Bariloche's Lake District for scenic drives, lake navigation, and boutique mountain lodges.

  • Continue to Ushuaia for a Beagle Channel navigation past the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse.

  • Upgrade specific nights or extend your stay at Rincón Chico for deeper wildlife immersion.

Every adjustment is shaped around what the trip means to you, then re-engineered with the same private logistics as the original route.
